Learning in Limestone Country

At the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is ‘Limestone Country’: an area of stunning natural beauty with rare flora and fauna and exceptional opportunities for outdoor learning. This project aims to make ‘Limestone Country’ more accessible by providing interpreted visits and activities to sites in the area.

We have special permission to visit some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful scenery including Ingleborough National Nature Reserve (NNR) and Malham Tarn NNR.

Schools out

Tailor-made day visits to nature reserves and historic sites are organised for Key Stage 2 & 3 pupils from local and urban schools. All visits are supported by educational materials linked to the National Curriculum. Activities are provided by experienced educational staff and local experts.

The main themes are:

  • Walking with Wildlife – wildlife habitats and ecology
  • Landscape Explorers – the geology and physical landscape
  • Signs of the Times – historic sites and human activity

Practical conservation activities can be arranged. Preparatory classroom sessions are available on request. Groups may be able to participate in the John Muir Award through the project.

Community Links

A range of activities is offered for local groups and community groups from West Yorkshire and North Lancashire. The emphasis is on involving groups which do not currently visit the area for physical, financial or cultural reasons. The aim is to overcome barriers limiting participation and enable everyone to enjoy the area.

Training

A programme of accredited courses in heritage and conservation skills is run through Craven College.

Example courses include dry stone walling, hedge laying, charcoal making, birds and flowers, lambing and art based activities.
